What is Biodiversity?
Biodiversity refers to the variety of all living organisms on Earth, including plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms, as well as the ecosystems they form. It is essential for healthy ecosystems, providing services like clean air, water, and food, and helping to regulate the climate.

Council Plans and Obligations

Stroud District Council emphasizes the importance of biodiversity and mandates that town and parish councils, including Stinchcombe Parish Council, actively contribute to its conservation and enhancement.  Key requirements include:

  • Biodiversity Policies:  Councils are expected to adopt and implement biodiversity policies tailored to their local contexts. These policies should focus on maintaining, restoring, or enhancing habitats and species populations.
See below link for Stinchcombe Parish Council Biodiversity Policy
  • Planning Considerations: When reviewing planning applications, councils must assess potential ecological impacts.  This involves requiring ecological assessments, such as Preliminary Ecological Assessments (PEA) or UK Habitat Surveys, especially if developments may affect local biodiversity.  The goal is to ensure that developments deliver Biodiversity Net Gain, meaning they leave the natural environment in a measurably better state than before.
  • Community Engagement: Councils are encouraged to involve local communities in biodiversity initiatives.  This includes promoting public access to natural sites, raising awareness of biodiversity issues, and supporting community-led conservation projects.
  • Alignment with District Strategies: Local councils should align their biodiversity efforts with broader district strategies, such as the Gloucestershire Local Nature Recovery Strategy.  This ensures a coordinated approach to nature recovery and habitat creation across the district.

By adhering to these requirements, Stinchcombe Parish Council’s Environment & Biodiversity Working Group can effectively contribute to the district’s biodiversity goals, fostering a healthier and more resilient natural environment for the community.
